👋 Hi.
Hi, we’re ChangeLab. We build software for progressive causes.
We define progressive broadly – and narrowly. Social progress comes on many different fronts, so we’ll help your campaign, whether it’s in service of one of the burning issues of the day or to save your local park.
But we’ll never work with, provide support to, or allow our software to be used by those who express views or act in ways that we consider exclude, oppress or discriminate against any marginalised group.
Like everyone else, we’re not perfect, so our values represent both a destination and a journey. We use them to govern our thinking on what we build next, who we work with — and how we do that building and working. As we grow, we’ll find new avenues and initiatives to continue to make these values a central part of what we do in the world.
Our values
Standing up for everyone
We are committed to combating racism, homophobia, transphobia, and every kind of discrimination through our work. We recognise the structural nature of the unequal outcomes and daily challenges faced by so many.
As individuals and as an organisation, we want to contribute every day to the elimination of inequity and oppression.
Tech as a force for good
The technology we have has been shaped by the structures of the society that made them. We recognise this and work towards ending discrimination and inequity of access through technology, rather than perpetuating it.
Acting with empathy
The world is complex, with our lives shaped by a dizzying array of intersecting and interdependent structures.
We know that people know their own situation best, and we work hard to listen and to understand that context before we act.
What about party politics?
We work with whoever is helping to push the dial towards a more equal society. On some issues, the best vehicle for making that change happen is through working with political parties.
Our structure
As a co-operative, ChangeLab is democratically owned and run. Each partner has equal and real control over the direction of the organisation. We as individuals structure our time as we choose and pursue ideas we find interesting, as long as we meet our commitments to each other and our clients.
Turning up (and how we keep being able to turn up)
We show up to work and try our hardest to put these values into reality. The only way that’s sustainable is by consciously making time and space to support one another and build resilience. That’s how we win tomorrow, as well as today.
We bias towards action
Acting fast is an important part of creating change. We focus on products that mobilise tens or hundreds of thousands of people at a time. Scale is our sweet spot, and we are open to experimentation.
We incorporate fast feedback loops and are willing to radically change or abandon an idea entirely if that is the best thing to do for the product or campaign.
You know you best
If we’re working with you, it’s because we believe in what you do. While we work together, we might feel strongly about how your campaign can succeed: we will always share that with you. We aim to be entirely open with you and always listen to the insights you bring.
The anti-opacity agenda
We are radically transparent. We’re open with one another on what matters: from what we all earn, to how we’re feeling, to what we think the best way to win a campaign is. We are and want to always be proud of what we do.
Gratitude, kindness, and other sins
Life is difficult, so we do our best to be kind.
We’re all grateful for each other’s work and value it equally. We show this gratitude demonstratively. We are comfortable talking about our feelings to each other, and if we’re struggling with something, we share that with our colleagues.
