Winning campaigns on the phone

Mayor Tracy Brabin wanted to be selected as the Labour Party's candidate for mayor in West Yorkshire. She won the selection contest by just 914 votes!  And her campaign's lead organiser says Ringround made the difference.

Ringround made it so easy and fun for volunteers for Tracy's campaign to call party members who had a vote. They made 9,621 calls in one month - with two volunteers making over 1,000 calls each.

Here's how they did it.

Planning the calls

Tracy and her campaign team were already familiar with Ringround from  Keir Starmer's successful campaign to become leader of the Labour Party. Call 4 Keir volunteers made hundreds of thousands of calls and Tracy’s campaign knew that even a fraction of those numbers could make a difference in West Yorkshire. They reached out to ChangeLab and once the decision had been made to get started with Ringround, Tracy’s volunteers were able to start calling within hours.

Acting fast

It was a short campaign, so the team and volunteers had to act fast. There were nearly 25,000 individual members on the calling list. Ringround was the right tool for the job.

Ringround connects volunteers automatically with the next call. And entering data about the call takes just a few key presses. So it’s typical for volunteers to make 50% more calls - on average, a staggering 45 calls per volunteer per hour - compared to standard dialling.

Make it local

Crucially, Ringround lets you use a local number. For Tracy’s campaign that meant if you received a call from a volunteer, it came from a local Bradford number. So local party members being called immediately felt connected to the volunteer at the end of the telephone.

These were West Yorkshire volunteers calling their fellow Labour Party members. Ringround technology ensured that it did not feel like they were being called by someone at HQ, but a real, local party member.

The campaigns team could be really precise with data targeting, feeding information gathered from Ringround back into our campaign to inform the targeting strategy. The team were delighted with how well it worked.
